How to create a quality key account manager CV

Key account managers are one of the most essential roles in medical sales, developing relationships with customers, developing business plans and addressing gaps in value propositions. These roles are very competitive, so it’s especially important to write an outstanding CV that will get you noticed.

There are many benefits of becoming a key account manager. In addition to working in a dynamic industry, it’s a flexible career with lots of room to progress and the chance to be a leader in medical sales. Are you ready for your next opportunity?

As one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies, we’re always on the lookout for talented people. Here are some of our top tips for creating a key account manager CV to help your application stand out from the crowd.

Remember to put the customer at the centre

A great key account manager CV is centred around the customer - how their needs were met, how their queries were handled and how they were kept updated about any issues. Demonstrate your commitment to customers by positioning yourself as their advocate - from the initial contact to meeting their needs long-term. Your CV should highlight not just why you care, but also how you ensure you’re always acting in their best interests.

Communication skills are key

One of the benefits of being a key account manager is the chance to develop your interpersonal skills. It's your job to build deep relationships with clients, as well as bridge the gap between the sales and support teams. In this role, you’ll need to relate in-depth industry knowledge in simple-to-understand terms to retain customers and win new business. That’s why communication skills are an integral part of the job.

When you’re looking for key account manager jobs, your CV should detail your strong communication skills. Do this by including your presentation skills, dialogue facilitation experience, and writing prowess.

Highlight your entrepreneurship

Pharmaceutical companies are complex enterprises that require strong business acumen. Yes, patient care must always come first, but pharmacies always need to watch their bottom line. Therefore, when it comes time to write your CV, it’s wise to highlight your past entrepreneurial experience. After all, it’s important if you want to negotiate the best deals.

If you don’t feel you have enough to draw from, consider the following:

  • Have you ever worked in another account manager position outside the pharmacy industry? If so, include your successes.
  • Describe your ability to hit customer targets of any kind and relate these skills to your ability to hit financial targets.
  • Remember that selling yourself is the ultimate entrepreneurship – this is your time to show them what you can do.

Reach out to your networks

When applying to key account manager jobs, your first point of call should be your professional networks. Networks are crucial to success in medical sales – these trusted colleagues and mentors will be able to point you in the direction of opportunities. You can also ask them to read and edit your CV – a second pair of eyes is always helpful for pointing out room for improvement and highlighting strengths.

Show off your leadership skills

If you want to progress in your career as a pharma account manager, you must demonstrate your leadership skills. Of course, leadership skills are beneficial in any industry, but they’re especially crucial when looking for key account manager jobs. Why? Because you need to feel confident directing customers and managing employees at all levels of the business.

The things that make a great leader – such as confidence, strong work ethic, and clear communication – also make a great key account manager.
