What is the meaning of MedTech?

MedTech encompasses a wide range of healthcare products, services, and solutions that are used to diagnose, treat, and monitor medical conditions.

The range of equipment that falls under the MedTech umbrella is vast and includes:

  • Diagnostic equipment
  • Digital tools
  • Innovative treatments

The sector is rapidly advancing which assists in improving patient outcomes and enhancing efficiency, accessibility, and accuracy of services.

What is the market outlook for medtech?

The MedTech industry in 2024 is continuing to grow and deliver innovation, AI and machine-learning MedTech products have reached an all-time high.

The MedTech industry is large and diverse, MedTech solutions are used by millions of patients daily. 

The UK’s NHS as an example spends an estimated £10 billion a year on MedTech products with the industry being a key provider of job opportunities and skills development.

MedTech jobs: the opportunities available

Below, we’ve outlined just some of the field-based roles IQVIA has to offer in MedTech to give you a clearer understanding. 

1. Clinical Specialist

If you’re a team player with excellent interpersonal skills who enjoys collaborating with colleagues to provide great service to customers, and wants to improve outcomes for patients, you’ll thrive in this role. 

Clinical Specialists have in-depth product expertise, are self-disciplined, and take accountability for supporting customers to ensure they’re getting the best out of the device. Working in various departments from radiology to oncology, and often in the operating theatre environment, Clinical Specialists are key players in MedTech.

Day-to-day activities

  • Building trusted long-term relationships with key clinical stakeholders and provisioning clinical support to customers.
  • Helping to develop business in existing accounts and assisting with converting new accounts.
  • Organising regular customer meetings and training sessions.
  • Contributing to the territory team as a whole meeting and exceeding targets and maximising opportunities (most Clinical Specialists don’t have their own personal sales targets, but are measured on other performance metrics).
  • Ensuring timely and accurate reporting of complaints or technical issues.

Clinical Specialist skills & qualities:

  • Clinical knowledge and expertise are often highly desirable - this is dependent on the company or product in question, and the desired candidate profile can vary. Some organisations seek out former Nurses, for example, as their first-hand experience adds credibility with customers. 
  • Communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Teamwork and collaboration
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Prior technical proficiency with medical devices, software, or equipment can sometimes be a prerequisite, but in-depth training is always provided, and some companies also welcome applications from entry-level candidates.

2. Sales Specialists / Territory Managers

Then a role as a Sales Specialist, Product Specialist, or Territory Manager might be the perfect next step in your professional career. Medical sales is a flexible and rewarding career path where you can really make a difference.

With strong backgrounds in sales, negotiation, and commercial acumen – combined with a scientific pedigree - the experts in these roles cultivate strong, long-term relationships with clients.

Responsibilities

  • Meeting and exceeding sales targets by showcasing innovative products to key stakeholders while elevating brand presence.
  • Taking charge of their territory, identifying high-value opportunities, and developing strategic plans to grow our market presence.
  • Using data and account strategies to understand customer needs and drive sales initiatives.
  • Building and nurturing lasting relationships with customers, understanding their needs, and presenting MedTech solutions.
  • Staying ahead of the competition by promoting the adoption of latest technologies.
  • Providing pricing and quotations, tendering for business in order to win contracts with individual hospitals or healthcare trusts

Skills & Experience

  • Communication skills.
  • Proficiency with sales tools to manage and track progress.
  • Sales expertise and prior medical device sales experience can be required by some companies, whilst others will consider entry-level candidates.
  • Knowledge of clinical procedures and products.

3. Biomedical Technician or Field Service Engineer

Biomedical Technicians or Field Service Engineers employ their technical expertise by collaborating with healthcare professionals to lead technical initiatives in medical device technology. IQVIA has opportunities available for permanent and contract positions in this field.

In their day-to-day, their skills in troubleshooting, repairing, and updating medical devices keep things operating smoothly and efficiently.

Responsibilities

  • Organising, testing, and updating medical devices.
  • Installing and configuring hardware, software, and network products.
  • Conducting routine checks and recoding data from product tests after installation and configuration.
  • Managing project timelines and customer requirements.

Skills & Experience

  • Professional business acumen and communication skills.
  • Comfortable working independently with minimal supervision.
  • Basic software programming skills.
  • Flexibility to travel as required.
