Why networking is essential for a career in medical sales

A career as a medical sales representative presents exciting and rewarding opportunities. Sales reps have an important role to play in providing patients with access to effective treatments that can prolong lives and improve the quality of life for patients suffering from chronic illness.

With over two million medical devices and treatments available on the market, a career in medical sales can also earn you an attractive income. Whilst the days can be demanding, professionals that take the time and the care to create a strong network can carve open lucrative opportunities.

The healthcare is founded on the principle of trust. So is networking. However, in recent years, the trustworthiness of healthcare manufacturers has slumped. The efficacy and effectiveness of medical equipment have called the marketing exploits of manufacturers into question.

The failings of pharmaceutical and biotech companies have created a divide between manufacturers and healthcare providers. Shady practices within the industry have caused a growing distrust among medical professionals.

As a result, today’s medical sales professionals are judged on the reliability and trustworthiness of the manufacturers you work for - and your personal integrity. Healthcare providers want to be assured the treatments and equipment they are investing in are reliable, safe and affordable.

The importance of networking for medical sales reps

Building meaningful relationships and earning the trust of medical professionals are both valuable skills for medical sales reps. Growing your network is essential for procuring clients but also for advancing your career.

Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn are the clear favourites for networking. They can also help sales reps build trust by posting credible content and announcing the latest trends in medical sales.

Knowledgeable and talented experts that produce high-quality content have more success in building a network of healthcare professionals. Actively engaging with prospects in chats and calls also helps to earn their trust.

Whilst social media platforms are a powerful tool for forging connections, online platforms don’t necessarily enable you to build meaningful relationships - at least not in the same way meeting, somebody in person can.

A top tip for any medical sales reps building a network is to attend live events. The medical community is highly active when it comes to organising presentations, groups and fundraisers.

Meeting in person gives you several advantages. Firstly, it gives you a platform to share your knowledge and expertise. Secondly, it’s an opportunity to learn about the pain point of your market audience and thirdly it helps to create an emotional connection.

Sharing expecting knowledge, listening to the needs of your clients and showing that you care enables you to connect with your clients on a personal level. Nurturing long-standing relationships builds trust and opens doorways to a successful career.

Opportunities for a career in medical sales

A career in medical sales is emotionally rewarding. Helping to get the right treatments to the right people benefits the community as a whole. On a personal level, a career in medical sales can also be financially rewarding.

To have a successful career in medical sales, however, you should look to work with companies that have a good reputation. Manufacturers that develop cutting-edge technology using advanced analytics and solutions founded on rigorous clinical research are best placed to deliver effective medical devices and treatments medical professionals can trust.
