Clinical Pharmacist duties - a day in the life
If you’ve been doing your research into your next clinical pharmacy-based career, you might find yourself thinking “What are the daily activities of a Clinical Pharmacist?”.
To answer that question and provide a real-life look into the day-to-day, we caught up with Amir Khosravi-Nik, Senior Clinical Pharmacist at IQVIA.
It’s safe to say that the life of a Clinical Pharmacist is definitely an enriching one. From helping patients with comprehensive medication plans to delivering clinical services, there’s always something going on that will either enhance your career growth or see you supporting people through their treatment journey.
Read on to get a glimpse of a day in the life of a Clinical Pharmacist.
“My day starts with my laptop and a hot cup of coffee”
The start of Amir’s morning routine involves responding to any new notifications, addressing medication queries from the wider team, and reading up on any important updates from National Lead Pharmacists. Having a solid morning routine is a really fantastic way to get you geared up for the day ahead.
After the admin tasks are taken care of, Amir starts prepping for patient consultations, commenting “I am in a fortunate position to be able to make a positive impact on a patient’s care, particularly from the lens of optimising their management, weaving in non-pharmacological recommendations for a holistic approach”.
Something that resonates with all of our Clinical Pharmacists here at IQVIA is helping practices ensure their patients are receiving the best treatment in line with the latest, evidence-backed guidance, this is something Amir echoed to us when we caught up. As Amir puts it “Being a pharmacist is not just handing out pills; we use our clinical skills and academic background to contribute to clinical decision-making, and to positively impact a patient’s health and longevity”.
When it gets to the end of the day, Amir sits down with a GP, running through any clinic notes and discussing the rationale behind the recommendations for each patient. Reflecting on the day is crucial for taking on board any feedback and going over any learning opportunities. After all, you want a career with plenty of opportunities for growth and development, right?
“Working at IQVIA Interface is a great opportunity to ensure the right patients are on the right treatments”
Amir touched on how pharmacy is a very dynamic field, especially when it comes to the management of medications used to treat long-term conditions. New pharmacotherapies, long-term studies and updated guidelines lead to a largely unmet need for practices to touch base with their patients.
It’s vital for our team to stay up to date with the latest trends in healthcare so that treatment plans can be updated accordingly with patient health and wellbeing at the heart of what we do.
“We are a team of pharmacists who are passionate about empowering patients”
Amir and his team take their job seriously, particularly when it comes to empowering their patients in their daily duties. Part of their role as Clinical Pharmacists is to facilitate in-depth discussions with patients about how they currently manage their condition and the scope for optimising their health.
“Colleagues are always there for help and advice, and vice versa”
Putting knowledge and expertise into practice to help the wider team of clinicians as well as patients, is just one of Amir’s favourite things about his role as a Senior Clinical Pharmacist. He also finds the general culture incredibly friendly and approachable, with training and support like no other he has personally encountered.
Support and empowering fellow colleagues really is what our teams do best, Amir is proof of that too. There’s always chance for conversations about your career path as well as training to boost your confidence when it comes to running clinics independently.
Wherever you are in IQVIA, team-building and community are at the forefront of your day-to-day, some of our pharmacy teams even run weekly quizzes!
“This is a company that encourages and promotes personal growth and welcomes innovation”
Since joining us in 2021, Amir hasn’t looked back, that could be in the cards for you too.
If you’re passionate and bold when it comes to sharing your ideas, you’ll fit right in at IQVIA. As Amir expertly puts it “Work hard, master the basics, but also be empowered to strive for excellence”.
