How to be on the road and stay at the top of your game
The demand for remote work has grown considerably in the last few years. Gallup reports long-term, fully remote work arrangements are expected to nearly triple from 8% in 2019 to 22% beyond 2023. With 60% of remote-capable workers seeking a long-term hybrid work arrangement, it looks like life beyond the bounds of a traditional office is set to become the norm, contributing to the steady growth of remote medical sales rep jobs. But with new ways of working comes new challenges.
At IQVIA we have a proud heritage of innovation and discovery, decades worth in fact. Meaning we know what it takes to create a culture that thrives, fuelled by passion, innovation, collaboration, and growth. With the flexibility to set your own hours, whether driving to a client or researching products, we offer a foundation of support for you to shape your dream job.
If you’re interested in remote medical sales jobs, you might be wondering what to expect. Medical sales representatives travel to a variety of healthcare facilities and locations to speak to customers and healthcare professionals throughout their week, which might include local or national travel. But how do you stay at the top of your game while working remotely?
Here are 5 tips to help steer you in the right direction.
1. Establish a routine and stick to it
When working remotely, it can be easy to get distracted or lose track of time. Establishing a routine can help you stay on track and ensure that you’re using your time effectively. Set a schedule for yourself that includes time for work, breaks, and personal tasks, and make sure to stick to it as much as possible. Why not try the 1-3-5 rule? Set one large goal for the day, and then identify three medium goals, and five mini goals. Goal setting in this way helps you prioritise and makes everything feel more achievable when broken down. Studies have even shown that goal-setting and productivity contribute to happiness.
2. Communicate effectively
It’s great to get in the zone but make sure to keep in touch with your team regularly, whether through email, instant messaging, or video conferencing. The same goes for communicating updates to customers to keep them in the loop. Be clear and concise in your communication and make sure to ask questions if you are unsure about anything. Harnessing digital tools like video calling software is one way to be more efficient.
3. Create a dedicated workspace
Having a designated workspace can help you stay focused and productive while working remotely. If you’re working from home, set up a desk or workspace that is comfortable and free from distractions. If you’re on the go, plan ahead and consider what you’ll need.
If you’re meeting a client for the day, do they have a good internet connection or do you need to download important files to work offline? Can you reschedule internal meetings for when you’re settled at a desk or at home? Planning for the space you’re in will help you stay focused and productive throughout the day.
4. Stay up-to-date on industry trends and developments
With a continuously evolving pharmaceutical industry, it’s important to keep yourself updated on innovations shaping the sales rep of the future. Regularly read industry publications, attend virtual conferences, and network. Staying informed about the latest industry trends and developments will help you stay ahead of the curve and provide valuable insights to your customers.
Sign up for publications that are relevant to your field, like Life Science Leader or PharmaPhorum and others to receive the latest industry news directly so you can always keep your finger on the pulse. Catch up in downtime, on the go or whilst waiting for a customer before a meeting.
5. Focus on building and maintaining strong relationships
Building and maintaining strong relationships with healthcare professionals is key to success as a medical sales representative. While working remotely, it's important to make an effort to connect with your customers on a personal level. Take the time to check in with them regularly, ask about their needs and concerns, and offer support and resources as needed. This will help you build trust and credibility with your customers, which can lead to long-term success and growth in your role.
On the road to success
Travel is a regular part of working as a medical sales representative. And what’s not to love about flexibility and independence?

IQVIA has been behind my development to become a MSL. The contracts that I have worked on have allowed me to push clinical projects with a recent opportunity to manage a pilot scheme integrating e-detailing into an established field based team. The result was an increase in sales.
Since joining IQVIA I have had unrivalled support and development from my manager to enable me to aspire to move into secondary care. I feel like my career is strongly supported by my manager in order to maximise my potential.
