How technology has transformed medical devices

Many healthcare professionals are entering medical device careers purely because of the excitement cultivated by the continuous development of new device innovations. These innovations are increasing positive patient outcomes to create rewarding medical job roles that make the sector a pleasure to work in. Suffice it to say, now is the ultimate time to work in medical sales.

According to Ryan Warren, a global leader in healthcare and life sciences, the growth of medical devices will increasingly expand over the next 5-10 years. This is because of technology and its improved impact on device conceptualisation, manufacturing, and distribution (processes that were harder and slower to implement before the rise of the digital era). Below, we look at why medical device sales reps are revelling in technology and its transformation of medical devices.

The introduction of AI medical devices

According to research, industries with an artificial intelligence (AI) influence have been expanding since 2000. AI-based medical devices are improving capabilities and revolutionising healthcare by assisting professionals to reach accurate diagnostics and improve treatment for overall patient care. This includes AI-monitoring devices that monitor while they treat. For example, diabetic patients can wear devices that sense and monitor blood sugar levels, signalling an alert when they become dangerously low.

Many of these devices are also providing patients with less radiation exposure when compared to similar devices in the past. There’s also the Internet of Things, which has had a huge impact on medical devices. The Internet of Things (IoT) has provided medical devices with a means to work wirelessly. This means medical professionals can gather and manage data from remote locations in real-time.

Utilising 3D technology to create devices

3D technology quickly found its way into the medical sector and has transformed the health industry by creating on-demand medical devices. It does this by turning a digital model into a physical representation with the use of appropriate materials that print in successive layers. Even CT scans, x-rays, MRI scans, and ultrasounds are being fed through 3D printers and are then converted into physical 3D models.

3D-developed devices are easier to procure and thus make surgical procedures faster, more lucrative, and oftentimes, more successful.

New Smart Factory manufacturing solutions

There are many skills a medical device salesperson needs to succeed in this career path – embracing technology in the workplace is one of them. Manufacturing medical devices are not only about producing advanced tools for the industry. It’s about improving processes to develop the best products. This is why many health sectors have introduced smart factory solutions to the development chain.

Smart systems monitor manufacturing processes while gathering data that can be used to determine the most efficient steps forward. Now, scientists and medical salespersons have access to on-demand, real-time performance information that helps to create superior devices quickly and at a fraction of the cost.

What does the future hold for medical devices?

With the medical device industry poised for significant growth, we can expect to see many new innovations. Some of these predicted medical device trends include robots in the operating room, robotic prosthetics, 3D printed human parts, and mechanobiological mechanisms. With the continued rise of technological innovations, the future certainly looks bright for medical devices.
