How to market yourself and land the dream medical sales jobs

So you’re looking for your next medical sales job. Where do you begin? Right from the beginning of your search, you need to think about how you can put your best foot forward. In this blog, we're going to cover: growing your online presence, enrolling on an online medical sales training programme, finding the right medical sales company for you, showing that company you have the skills they need, perfecting your elevator pitch, and more. Let's delve straight in.

Grow your online presence

Pre-Covid, there was a gradual shift toward online recruitment underway, and the pandemic hit fast-forward on this. Many employers were dabbling in virtual interviewing for the first time and countless people were being onboarded virtually, meeting their new colleagues over the screen. What does all this mean? Having a strong online presence has shot to the top of your priority list.

You’re likely not a stranger to LinkedIn, but perhaps you’re not using it in the best way. Update your profile to include all your relevant professional information, including adding to your ‘skills & endorsements’ section. Go beyond making a stand-out profile and strengthen your presence by sharing relevant industries news, interacting with companies that you respect, and connecting with thought-leaders within healthcare and pharma to build your professional network .

Enrol on an online training programme

If there's one thing that employers like to see, it's people who have used their personal time to develop professionally. Not only does it show that you're interested in your field, but it also displays a real commitment to growing your career. Sales Hacker and HubSpot Inbound Sales are just two free options but there are many more programmes out there.

Decide what medical sales company to work for

So, you've got yourself noticed by some medical sales companies. But which one do you want to work for? It can be a tough decision, especially if you've got several on your radar. The best place to start is with your career goals. Map these out and then compare them to the companies goals and values.

Show how your skills will help the company

While employers want to hear about your skills, experience, and achievements in an interview, what they really want to know is how this will help their company.

Talk numbers

What should medical sales reps should do more? It’s simple - shout about their achievements using numbers. It's all well and good telling an employer that you developed a new system for generating sales leads, but unless they hear the results, it won't go very far in impressing them. If the new system led to a 25% improvement in sales performance, then get this message across.

Prove your passion

Too much focus on numbers will lead an employer to question where your true passion lies. They'll wonder if you're solely in sales to be successful, or if you really care about the work that you do. The answer? Take every opportunity to talk about why medical sales is the right path for you .

Perfect your elevator pitch

You’ve probably heard the cliché question: “So what will you bring to this company?”. Interviewers might not ask you this explicitly, but it is what they’ll be trying to glean from your answers. The best way to get this message across is to come up with a strong elevator pitch .

Here’s what you need to cover in this 30-second pitch:

  1. Start with an attention-grabbing introduction about who you are
  2. Give a summary of your unique skills and how they make you qualified for the role
  3. Share your goals and how they align with the company’s goals and values
